l have a 99 infiniti qx4.l had a problem about 3 months ago when my e-brake light starting coming on randomly and l could not get it off.l ignored it too long and ended up having to have completely new brakes put in for about $1,000.That was about 5 weeks ago, and everything has been fine, except now my e-brake light is on.The brakes can not be messed up, they're brand new.l had read that sometimes the e-brake light comes on when the fluid or something is low, but like l said, this seems very unlikely. Is it most likely that l just have a faulty light/sensor?Or is something really the matter?

As a side note, whenever I am on a bumpy road and the car, ya know, lands ''hard'' after a bump like an off-road site or contstruction site, the light often then goes off, which makes me think something is getting ''slammed'' into place.Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Andrew

First of all, go check ur brake fluid.

The brake light comes on for a few reasons. The most common is having ur e-brake engaged or low fluid.

The fluid level will go down as ur brakes r used, because the pads or shoes will wear down & the fluid will fill the pistons so that the distance to the rotor or drum stays the same regardless.

The fluid level indicator will be under u hood. It is usually clear to slightly yellow/brown. Only fill it with a new bottle of fluid (so buy the small bottles) & do not do it on a very humid or rainy day as the fluid absorbs moisture & that is the last thing u want in ur brake system.

Who charged u a grand to fix ur brakes? l can do a complete 4-wheel brake job for my infiniti for $600 & that is with upgraded equipment.

Another possible problem is that ur e-brake is improperly tensioned.

Your brake pedal uses hydraulic pressure to create friction to stop ur QX4, the e-brake uses a steel cable. The cable can be over tightened or too loose, but in the case of a brake light issue, it will be over tightened.

Final thought:

If ur fluid level is low & u fill it & then it gets very low again before ur next brake job, then ur probably have a leak somewhere, because the brake fluid is in a closed loop. It should not go anywhere except to extend the pistons when the pads r getting thinner.
