What is Inifiniti thinking when they put the 5-speeds auto tran in their new models while all of their competitors already have 6 or more speeds?
The current 5-speed tran is working but not working fine. It gives highway MPG worse than some SUVs. It is the biggest thing keep me from buying a new G.

5 speeds are probably less complex, and the trans themselves probably weigh less.

just guessing though

The transmission in Infiniti`s can get the job done with 5 gears.

l hate the 5 speed in my G35. It hesitates to upshift after I've accelerated so it hangs in the high RPMs and on the highway it gets below average fuel economy because the motor is spinning at over 2,000RPM. That is insane considering a 7.0L Corvette Z06 can get up to 27 MPG highway when l am in my 3.5L getting 19 MPG highway. Not having the extra gear that its competitors do is a definate flaw.

The 5-speeds are still just as good. They are not very outdated. Plus to design and build a brand new 6-speed takes a lot of time, money and effort which Infiniti does not have right now with everything that is going on.

Nissan already has an 8 speed transmission developed. l guess they shouldve dropped that in the new G.

l do not see why u all r complaining about the G35 auto trans. If u want a 6-speed get the MT. l like the 5speed auto with the rev-matching on the newer cars.

Competitors.fine, let is take its target competitor; the BMW 3 series & the IS300. Sure the BMW has the DSG & the IS300 has the 6spd Sequential Shift, but at what cost? You're paying PREMIUM to get these knicknacks. The BMW has to be turboed to get it on the 300hp range & the IS300 has to kick its engine compression UP to get to the power match with the Infiniti. Now, the Infiniti controls 306HP with a FIVE SPEED AUTO & it is NATURALLY ASPIRATED. Not to mention the insurance, maintenance, & parts costs a hell of a lot less than the IS & the BMW.

If you're just basing the ''infiniti suck'' on transmission, fine, it is lagging behind in how many gears it can stick in the auto but the technology is just as advanced as its 6spd counterparts. If u REALLY want the 6spd get the MT version of the G35. Infiniti makes up for what it lacks in quality & overall satisfaction of owning a luxury car without breaking the bank. That is all that counts for me.

Maybe all of u need to maintain ur vehicles much more carefully & get the maintenance it needs so it will perform to its full capacity.and quit using regular gas, that is why u have sucky mileage. Then again, if u all could afford a 6spd auto/DSG/Sequential, u would not be driving a ''sucky'' 5spd Infiniti now, would you?

l have to agree with you. l have no clue what they r thinking but their competition is getting more advanced than they are. l was really excited to go to the G35 sedan unveiling at my local Inifiniti dealership last year, but was very disappointed when l found out it was a 5sp auto. What luxury car brand has 5 sp anymore for automatic? l can not really think of any..Yes, it may be more costly, but hey, u r trying to compete against BMWs, Lexus, & Mercedes correct? l do not understand their logic, but l think they need to get their act together...

Even for their G37, a 5 speed for a 2008 model? So sad..

Yes, their manual has 6 sp, but that is manual. 6 sp manuals came out a couple of years ago already.but 6 sp for automatics r still fairly new.

l did not wait around for the 6 spd automatic & just went with the 5 sp automatic G35 coupe instead because l do not know how to drive manual & live in a city with many hills & a lot of traffic.

Overall, Infinitis r great cars, but l am pretty disappointed as well with their decision making.a toned down G37 & a 5 spd..wow...do they want their repeat customers coming back? l guess not..
